"Harbour Works"
Images deconstruct within images, hang precariously from the landscape, like
cranes over the harbour, reconstructing in the powerful relationship between
all the elements within each canvas. It is an audacious journey, where conflicting
and complimentary media are fused together through rich associations - the harbour
and sea as music, and vice versa, visually given life, purveying whirlwinds
and pools of emotion and spirit. Julia Sutton's harbour transgresses its own
reality, and is remade and reworked in the helter-skelter of thought and action,
fascinated and uplifted by surfaces (celebrating light on water), but journeying
much deeper to where discord breaks through. And it is this discord of method,
materials, colour, scale, and translucence which gives these paintings their
vigour and harmony.
